IMPORTANT DATES 2008

SCOUTS

*April 26th - Camp clean up, ALL YOUTH MUST ATTEND on this week-end, anyone else wishing to give a hand at the Scout Camp on Mush-A-Mush, Northfied is welcome. Groups from the District will participate. There will be a list of areas that need addressing at the camp.

* May 3rd - Scout Trees, place/time TBA

* May 23rd-25th - Operation Mayflower, Scout Camp on Mush-A-Mush (hosted by 1st New Germany) This is the anual camp where you participate in activites as Patrols (Tigers & Ravens). 1st New Germany was the overall winners of Mayflower 2007!

* June 6th-8th - Survial Fun Camp, Scout Camp on Mush-A-Mush (hosted by 3rd Bridgewater) This is the camp where you are mixed with other groups and participate in challanges. **3rd year Cubs can attend!

CUBS

* April 12th -District Kub Kar Races, Centre School (small gym) 9:00am

* April 28th - Group Bike Rodeo, NGES 6:30 (weather permitting-rain date May 5th)

* May 10th - District Bike Rodeo, Bridgewater Exhibition - 4H Building

* July 4th-6th - District Cub Camp, Scout Camp on Mush-A-Mush (hosted by 2nd Maitland)

BEAVERS

* May 31st - District Beaveree, Scout Camp on Mush-A-Mush (hosted by 1st New Germany), 10am-2pm

Cub Car Details

There will be 2 show car categories in this event, cub only and cub with help.Cub only should do just about everything but cut it out.Anybody needing help with cutting it out let me know.We will be weighing and putting wheels on at cubs on March the 31st.Cub cars should be done by March 31st. We will race our cars at NGES. All participants go to the District Cub Car races at Center Consolidated School (small gym).The kids should be there for around 8:30 am, start time is 9am & the day usually finishes by lunch time.

We have 8 Cubs and 2 leaders in this group.The ages of the cubs range from 8-11 years of age. In cubs we do things like go on hikes, tours, camp and try and do some communtiy work as well. DYB stands for (Do Your Best). DOB stands for(Do Our Best).

Here is a general list for winter camping for the weekend.whenever you pack your gear for hiking or camping, you should ALWAYS put it in plastic bags.Grocery bags well very well for this.

These are the minutes from the last meeting to be approved at the next meeting.

Group Committee Minutes
Tuesday, October 23, 20077:00pm

Members Present: Krista & Paul; Bernie; Shirlette, Katrina; Cindy; JoAnne; Catherine

Group Committee Chair, Catherine Robar welcomed members and called the meeting to order.
Minutes were not available due to the absence of the secretary, Julie Lowe.
Correspondence – A letter from the Legion invites us to take part in the usual Remembrance Day activities.

Treasurer’s Report (attached) Notes – the First Aid Kit which was prepared and first used for CJ is suitable for almost of our activities. A 10x10 canopy was purchased with remaining money from the Grant from the Municipality.
The Report was moved by Treasurer, Krista Emino, seconded by Bernie.

CJ’07 Report – It was an excellent trip – would definitely do it again! At Camp Tamaracouta, in Quebec, 9000 people, 8000 youth from all parts of Canada and many International Groups. 6 Scouts and 2 Leaders from 1st New Germany attended. They experienced a wide variety of challenges. It was both a broadening experience and an affirmation of the value of our program. The next CJ is not yet scheduled, but a provincial jamboree is slated for 2009. Our Scouts have made a presentation to the Mason’s and will visit a Lions’ meeting tomorrow evening. Thanks was expressed to all who helped make it possible for our boys to attend CJ’07, especially Paul & Krista who accompanied, and Bernie who assisted in many ways with the preparation.

Group Reports
Beavers have 10 registered – 3 girls/7 boys – 4 1st year members. Leaders are Krista Emino; Julie Lowe; Brittany Lapointe. Account Balance is $5.45. They had a hike on Oct 6th with the Cubs, and will have a Hallowe’en Party on Monday.

Cubs have 7 registered – 7 boys. Leaders are Paul Savory, Colby Emino-Savory assists. Account Balance is $289.28. They hiked with the Beavers on Oct 6th : Hallowe’en Party this week. We do need another adult leader. Two names were mentioned of people who may be able to help; if neither of these work out, we may advertise in the School Newsletter or Church Bulletins.

Scouts have 11 registered – 11 boys. Leaders are Paul Savory and Bernie Surette. Scouter Joe has offered to assist and acts as a resource person. Account Balance is $176.97 They are continuing work on the camp behind Paul’s, and will try to camp out before Spring. They have enough for two Patrols; the boys and leaders took a St. John Ambulance First Aid Course; a Canoe Course; placed first at Mayflower Camp; 3 Scouts are working toward Chief Scouts; in December we hope to offer a Gun Safety Course.
They didn’t attend JOTA(Jamboree on the Air) due to the wet conditions.
A Total of 28 Youth

New Business: At the New Germany Christmas Festival, As a Community Service project Scouts will look after the Bonfire and serve Hot Chocolate (Mary Wagner will provide the syrup) Municipality will provide marshmallows for roasting.
Investiture will be held on November 5th at 6:30pm. Families & friends are invited, Program at 6:30 followed by Desserts. – Group committee will provide tea, coffee, juice; and families are asked to bring desserts according to the number coming with them.
On Remembrance Day we will do the usual Parade from the Legion to the Cenotaph, and then to St. John’s Church for the Family Service. Refreshments will be provided by the Legion Auxiliary and prepared by parents. On Remembrance Day the Guides and Scouts will lay a wreath together at the Cenotaph; we will give the usual donation to the Poppy Fund.

Our groups took part in the Scouting Display at the Desbrisay Museum in Bridgewater in September.
It was suggested Christmas Donations(instead of exchanging gifts) be given to the school breakfast program.
A card will be sent to Kendal and his family, and a donation in memory of Brandon will be given.
New harnesses for flag bearers are needed. Paul will look into this.

(Note – new signing officers will need to be established for some of our accounts at next meeting)

The group committee is made up of: chairperson, secretary, treasurer, leaders and all of the parents of the youth involved. It is put in place for everyone to keep informed of the financial state of the group. Also to have knowledge of what is going on with all of the groups and information of different events. All parents are encouraged to attend these meetings.
The meetings are usually held in the Anglican Church Hall (downstairs).
The date of the next meeting will be Tuesday, January 22nd @ 7:00pm.

Over all, this was a wonderful once in a lifetime experience for youth and leaders. The weather was great, despite all the dust. We became very close with a group camping behind us from Stonewall, Manitoba (1st Stonewall). There were also 10 other countries that had attended. There were places like Australia, China, Kenya, Ireland, USA and Scotland to name a few. In attendance were 8,000 youth and 1,000 adults. Here are a few pictures of some of the things that we did at Taramacouta,Quebec

Adhesive bandages, assorted sizes
Gauze pads
Adhesive tape
Safety pins
Tweezers
Coins (for emergency phone calls)
Paper & pencil (for writing down emergency information)

Items for Survival Kit part:

High energy snack (granola bar, dried fruit, peanuts)
Waterproofed matches*
Small pocket knife*
Brightly colored, large, plastic garbage bag (for shelter & signaling)
Whistle (pealess)
Mirror/or an old cd works just as well
Nylon or strong string
Aluminum foil (to make cooking & drinking utensils)
Compass

*For 3rd year cubs only on hikes.
*Must be in kit as Green Star requirement.

Ideally these items should be kept in a fanny pack for easy access.

Canoe Course

This September, 6 scouts and 3 leaders (1 leader from 1st Maitland), went down to Mush a Mush scout camp in Lunenburg N.S. to take part in a canoe course.It was all that we expected and then some.We went over canoe saftey, rescue, parts of a canoe and different strokes as well.I am pleased to say that we all pass and can now enjoy all the beauty that mother nature has to offer even more.We would like to thank our fellow scouter and instructor Doug Connors.
